Small Explosive Devices Found Near NJ Parade Route: Sources
Mutiple small explosive devices have been found on a property near the Labor Day parade route that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was supposed to be marching in Monday morning, senior law-enforcement officials tell NBC 4.
The South Plainfield Labor Day parade and fireworks display was canceled Monday morning due to a "security concern." The borough issued the cancelation on Facebook saying police were conducting an investigation into the matter.
A senior New Jersey law-enforcement official told NBC 4 that multiple small explosive devices were found on a man's home and in wooded areas along his property.
There was no indication an of the devices were planted, however the man's home was close to the parade route, so officials decided to cancel the parade as a precaution, they said.
Another senior law-enforcement source told NBC 4 more than a dozen of the small devices were found overnight. The individual was described as an older male who may have been living in the basement of his parents' home. He is in custody, the source said.
The 62nd Annual South Plainfield Labor Day Parade was set to kick off at 10 a.m. Monday. The event was billed as New Jersey's oldest and largest Labor Day parade.
