Messages of Love, Calls for Justice After Bicyclist's Death

Community members in one Brooklyn neighborhood came together Monday to mourn a 25-year-old bike messenger who was hit and killed by a large truck last week.

Aurilla Lawrence was riding her bicycle late Thursday when she hit and killed by a tanker truck late Thursday in near Broadway and Marcy Avenue in Williamsburg, the NYPD said. The driver of the truck never stopped.

Amid the grieving Monday was a call for the community to do more after five cyclists have already been killed citywide. Last year the number was 10..

"We’re sending a message to the city and to the mayor," one man said at the vigil. "We need to start taking action proactively before people are killed."
