Airport-Like Vending Machines to Replace Subway Newsstands

High-tech vending machines like the ones you may see at airports could soon be replacing subway newsstands.

The MTA will soon replace the stands on platforms with the new vending machines after a decline in newspapers and candy sales. Straphangers can buy toiletries and grab-and-go snacks from the new machines.

The MTA told the Daily News, who first reported the change, that the agency is having trouble filling the vacant stands, adding that 40 percent of the stands on transit property are empty.

The new machines will start to appear on mezzanines this summer. Existing newsstands doing business will stay in business.
