Elijah Cummings, House Oversight Committee Chair, Dies at 68
Congressman Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, Maryland, died early Thursday morning at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to complications from "longstanding health challenges," his office confirmed in a statement. He was 68.
Cummings, a Democrat, represented Maryland's 7th congressional district for over two decades and had served as the chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform since January. He was a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.
The congressman recently underwent an undisclosed medical procedure. He previously was treated for heart and knee issues.
