World Reacts to Deadly New Zealand Mosque Shootings

After mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques left 49 dead and many in the hospital with gunshot wounds, the world reacts to what New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence."

At a press conference following the attack, Ardern said "it is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack."

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said "We are outraged, and we stand here and condemn absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist right wing terrorist. This attack reminds us of the evil that is ever present."

Turkish President Recep Erdogan said "On behalf of my country, I offer my condolences to the Islamic world and the people of New Zealand, who have been targeted by this deplorable act - the latest example of rising racism and Islamophobia."

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said on Twitter "I’m utterly saddened by the mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand. My thoughts go to the victims & their families."

Mayor of New York City Bill DeBlasio said "The people of New Zealand are in the hearts and minds of New York City tonight as heartbreaking reports continue out of Christchurch. Our love and prayers are with all impacted by the horrific attack at these mosques."

Several police departments within the US said they would increase security around mosques in response to the shooting.
