USPS Mailboxes Litter Highway After Accident in New Jersey

An apparent two-vehicle accident in New Jersey left nearly a half-dozen USPS mailboxes -- the big blue ones -- in the middle of the road, footage from Chopper 4 showed Monday.

A report of the eastbound accident on Interstate 280 in West Orange came in shortly before 9 a.m. Details on what happened weren't clear, but an aerial view showed quite an unusual scene.

Chopper 4 showed at least five large blue USPS mailboxes on the highway near the ramp for exit 9. Some were tipped over or leaning precariously, others were open in the front -- and at least one appeared to be spewing papers out of it. The contents of the mailboxes weren't clear.

It's not exactly clear what happened, nor was it known if anyone was hurt. Chopper 4 showed a heavily damaged sedan stopped behind a truck, the one that apparently had been carrying the mailboxes, on the highway. A person was sitting on the hood of the sedan as authorities assessed the scene.

Traffic appeared to be rubbernecking in the area. A cause of the accident is under investigation.
