Man Questioned in Wild FDR Police Chase, Shooting: Source

A man is being questioned in connection with Thursday's wild chase and shooting on Manhattan's FDR Drive that left two cops hospitalized and part of the roadway shut down for hours, a police source with knowledge of the case says.

The source told News 4 Friday that the man, who has a history of weapons and larceny charges, walked into Queens General Hospital at some point earlier in the day. He may have been in the vehicle that cops pulled over on the highway near East 15th Street, the police source says. A woman who also may have been in the vehicle is being questioned as well. Police are looking into whether four people were in the car at the time of the wild pursuit, the source says.

No charges have been filed at this time. It's not clear if police believe they know the identity of the driver. Sources said late Thursday that the driver of the vehicle, which was stopped because it matched a suspect vehicle description, backed up and hit the officers' patrol car, then took of.

Police then fired shots at the vehicle, which was later found abandoned near East Houston Street, where the suspect and whoever else was in the vehicle apparently fled on foot. The car was a BMW with New York plates and did not appear to be stolen, cops said. No one was hurt in the gunfire.

An officer in the car hit by the driver was taken to Bellevue Hospital with minor neck and arm injuries; he was treated and later released. A second officer was treated at an area hospital for tinnitus and was also later released.

The investigation is ongoing.
