At Least 1 Dead in Mangled Long Island Car Crash: Officials

One person is dead after several cars crashed on Long Island, sending one of the vehicles into a building, officials say.

The crash happened just after midnight Tuesday morning in the area of Acacia Avenue and Baldwin Road in Hempstead, according to officials. A man inside a green car that split in half died. His identity has not yet been released, but family members at the scene tell News 4 he was a 23-year-old man.

The driver of the green car apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a restaurant at the intersection. A second car was discovered a block away and may have crashed into parked cars before coming to a stop.

Video from the scene shows the mangled green car as detectives put down evidence markers on the street.

The streets around the crash was shut down as police investigated.

It’s not yet clear how the driver lost control, nor whether anybody else was injured. The investigation is ongoing.
