Man Crashes Car Into Creek, Falls Asleep in Nearby Biz: Cops

A driver whose car plunged into a creek in New Jersey swam back to shore and broke into a nearby business before taking off his clothes and falling asleep, police said.

Doruk Demirtas, of Palisades Park, was driving his Ford Fusion east on East Union Avenue in East Rutherford around 1:15 a.m. on Thursday when he hit a guardrail at the end of the dead-end street, East Rutherford police said.

The car flew off the road and into Berry’s Creek, where it sank into the water, according to police.

Demirtas managed to get out of the car, swam to shore and walked west on East Union Avenue until he reached a nearby business, police said.

After breaking in, Demirtas took off his wet clothing and fell asleep, according to police.

An employee called police after he noticed two broken windows and discovered the man inside the business.

Demirtas has been charged with fourth-degree criminal trespass.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he was treated for any injuries after the incident and his attorney information wasn’t immediately available.

Emergency responders called to the scene of the car crash confirmed that no other passengers had been in the car with Demirtas, according to police.
