First Transgender Designer Shows Collection at NYFW

A transgender designer made history this week as the first to show a collection at New York Fashion Week.

Pierre Davis, the lead designer of the Los Angeles brand No Sesso, showed her Autumn/Winter 2019 collection of bold lines and powerful silhouettes Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Pier 59 Studios in Chelsea. She is the first openly transgender designer to ever show on the official calendar for NYFW — a major step towards inclusivity within the fashion industry.

The name No Sesso translates to “no gender” in Italian, which refers to its gender-fluid clothing designs. Davis founded No Sesso in 2015, and the brand has since gained recognition for its use of prints and reconstructed materials.

No Sesso’s Autumn/Winter collection features deep, open necklines, color blocking and structured shoulders.

The history-making show was first announced by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) last month.

“The show is inspired by business wear and evoking the spirit of the Glamazon regardless of gender,” Davis said to CFDA in its announcement. “The idea of pushing weight and making things happen every when there seems to be no way.”
